The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata sits low, has a snug interior and doesn’t require much power to deliver a lot of fun. Among new cars that frequently deploy turbocharging to amp up power, 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque don’t seem all that impressive. But this amount of muscle is perfect in a small, well-balanced, well-tuned, rear-drive car. NA Miata (First Gen) Although the NA Miata wasn’t the most powerful car with it 1.6L inline 4 engine producing only 116hp (85kw) from 1990 – 1993 and the revised 1.8 L inline 4 engine producing only 12 more horsepower at 128 hp for the years 1994 and 1995 and then being improved once again from 1996 – 1997 to pump out 133 hp (99kw) the NA Miata definitely wasn’t a powerhouse. With 26 more horsepower than last year, it’s the most powerful Miata ever, and it’s the quickest, sprinting to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds. That’s over a full second quicker than Lance’s S2000. With a quarter-mile time around 14.5 seconds, the Mazda could even put some stock classic American muscle cars on the trailer. Mazda. But what it lacks in soul it makes up for in anvil-like durability and the ability to just keep pounding around a track all day long. It would be a sad day if a 300 hp, $65k (new MSRP in 2016) Cayman S was slower than a 150 hp $25k Miata (MSRP for a 2016 Miata). Brett_Murphy (Ex-Patrón) GRM+ Member and MegaDork.
I can hear you now. "We aren't griping that the Miata doesn't have 400 horsepower, you moron; we're griping that it doesn't have 200." Well, two hundred horsepower means a few things.
